Islam-Confucianism Leadership Dialogue (ICLD)

Introduction:

The International Seminar on Islam and Confucianism: A Civilizational Dialogue, held in 1995 at the University of Malaya, marked a remarkable milestone in Malaysia’s history as it initiated a meaningful dialogue between Islam and Confucianism. This ground breaking event paved the way for improved mutual understanding between these distinct civilizations, cultures, and communities.

In this new era, intercultural understanding has evolved from being just an ingredient for “peaceful coexistence” among nations to a fundamental pillar for global stability and progress. Without meaningful dialogue in the face of globalization, there is a risk of exacerbating power imbalances and fostering a climate of hegemony. By embracing dialogue as an integral part of the globalizing world, nations can strive towards equitable and inclusive international relations, fostering a sense of cooperation and shared responsibility.

We believe that the timing is ideal for initiating a civilization dialogue between Islam and Confucianism, two of the most significant religious and philosophical traditions in the world.  In recognition of this, the Al-Ghazali Chair of Epistemology and Civilizational Studies and Renewal at ISTAC-IIUM, the Centre of Regional Strategic Studies (CROSS), and the Southeast Asia Research Centre for Humanities (SEARCH) have come together to launch the Islam-Confucianism Leadership Dialogue (ICLD2023).

The Dialogue aimed to foster an atmosphere of in-depth conversation, interaction, and intercultural connection, with the goal of recognizing and appreciating the commonalities that exist between Islam and Confucianism. By acknowledging these shared values and beliefs, the dialogue sought to create a foundation for a better world built upon mutual understanding.

By bringing scholars, experts, and practitioners from both Islamic and Confucian traditions together, we create a platform for open and respectful exchanges. Participants engaged in thoughtful discussions, shedding light on the similarities and differences in their respective philosophies, ethics, and social practices. By exploring these commonalities and distinctions, the dialogue aimed to deepen understanding and build bridges between these influential civilizations

The significance of this event extends beyond its immediate impact. It sets a precedent for future civilizational dialogues, emphasizing the importance of transcending cultural and religious boundaries in order to foster harmonious coexistence. The dialogue serves as a catalyst for promoting global understanding and appreciation of shared values. This aligns with the spirit of Malaysia MADANI, which emphasizes inclusivity, and the Belt & Road Initiative, which seeks to enhance connectivity and cooperation among diverse nations.
